Behind The Songs: Yesterday Is Gone

It is quite inspiring that a murderer and adulterer can also be someone God calls a man after His heart. It shows the merciful, compassionate God. In Psalm 51 the psalmist births a prayer that we all cling to down here, a prayer of repentance and need. David wants to be new again. He wants all of his wrongs and crimes forgiven by God himself. He realizes there’s no more hiding and wants to be cleansed and new. So he owns his stuff, he doesn’t try to say sorry, he asks for forgiveness.

It realigns us to the reality of Christ and is the most powerful compass to the human heart. I learned this last year the differences between my wishes and the promises of God. It is sometimes similar but at times my wishes are not lined with His promises.

I would do my best to rest in all God is and the gratitude’s I have. These truths of God can bring peace to the heart and cease the insanities of the mind. While the band and I were working this song out, one of the guys thought that these lyrics were also great things to pray over children around the world that are lost in poverty and abandonment.

It’s such a great decompression to discover how ordinary we are as human beings, but that Christ in us and God’s spirit on us moves in extraordinary ways through us and around us. The gift God gives us when we are born and the gifts God gives us through Christ are beautiful and can bring about profound change on the earth.

Where once there was a clinched fist of frustration and anger there now was an open, receptive, grateful hand to God, knowing that this God alone was behind this chain-breaking moment. Suddenly they thought they must have been dreaming. It was too good to be true. The mourning was gone, they were free, and God had done great things. Break out the music, the singing, and dancing. The sun always shines. You don’t always see it cause the earth rotates or there are clouds, or odd days that don’t fit your normal mundane moments, but it always shines. There will always be pain. Things in this life can burn, moments you cause and moments that others cause or, that just happen. But these moments are refining…

With the advent of our new record, I thought it might be nice to have a wee moment to think about how we might receive these songs theologically-for all of you fellow nerds out there-and even how we might receive all kinds of art in and out of the Church theologically.

After a few conversations I have come to realize that spiritually sometimes, we do not have the freedom of movement. Maybe our hands are full and clenched tight with things we are afraid to let go, or possibly made into a fist because of anger. Whether it is anger or fear, greed or guilt we keep ourselves from allowing us to feel totally free.

I’m concerned were losing some context with some of our language. Let me give you an example. Recently I wondered, with the advent of the digital age, will we lose the terms clockwise and counterclockwise, or even the phrase around the clock. Oh we may continue to use the phrases but as the clock face with two hands starts to disappear from our daily view and is replaced by the digital clock, will we understand the context where these words came from?
The Rising Thought

I suppose the first things I think of when I think of the word “rising” is movement, motion, flow, and kinesis. Its kind of a lame initial picture but nevertheless coming to life in the morning is not easy for me. It’s too much motion all at once. The initial movement of throwing the covers off, stretching and trying to simply wake up is a monumental part of my day.
